everyday problems inform research interests, while the opposite holds the true: research interests inform everyday problems. the thinking needed to unmask the specifics of these ideas is reciprocal in nature. the deep of fundamental understanding of one refines understanding the other.
In the positivist paradigm, research is the scientific rules that researchers follow. In the post-positivist paradigm, research is what researchers do.
Narrow positivist use of formal scientific theory and methods can raise the reliability and generalisability of research, but lower its validity and relevance. Narrow post-positivism can improve validity and relevance, but at the expense of reliability and generalisability.
